To all Faculty and Staff:
I am pleased to provide you with information regarding the 2015 Faculty of Medicine Awards Call for Nominations. Please see below for descriptions and details of awards for faculty and staff.
Faculty of Medicine awards provide a tremendous opportunity to acknowledge outstanding faculty and staff who are dedicated to advancing the five commitments in Our Strategic Directions. I encourage you to review each award category and submit nominations for appropriate candidates. The recipients of 2015 Faculty of Medicine awards will be announced in the spring and the awards will be presented at the 2015 Annual Awards Reception in the fall.
Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development Awards | Deadline: 4:00 pm, February 2, 2015
The Faculty of Medicine Innovation and Service Awards recognize exemplary and distinguished activities/service to the UBC Faculty of Medicine in the areas of Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Medical Education (CME/CPD).
Two awards are available with an honorarium of $1,000 each:
- Award for Innovation in CME/CPD
- Award for Distinguished/Outstanding Service to CPD
Webber Lifetime Achievement Award | Deadline: 4:30 pm, February 13, 2015
The Bill and Marilyn Webber Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes extraordinary members of the Faculty of Medicine who have had sustained distinguished careers at UBC in the areas of research, teaching and/or service. One award per year is available.
Killam Teaching Prizes | Deadline: 4:30 pm, February 20, 2015
UBC Killam Teaching Prizes are UBC’s most prestigious teaching awards. The Prizes are awarded annually, and are supported by the UBC Killam Endowment Fund. The Prizes recognize excellent teaching in the MD Undergraduate Program, undergraduate science programs, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy programs, B.M.L.Sc. program, residency programs, schools and graduate programs within the Faculty. For the 2013-2015 academic year, the Faculty of Medicine will receive four UBC Killam Teaching Prizes of $5,000 each. The prizes will be presented at 2015 Spring Convocation, with award certificates presented at the 2015 Annual Awards Reception in the fall.
Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research | Deadline: 4:00 pm, February 24, 2015
The Dr. Chew Wei MBBS [HK] FRCOG [ENG] Memorial Prize in Cancer Research establishes a prize, to a physician or scientist – whether in academia, government, non-profit organizations, or the private sector – who has made a transformational, internationally recognized contribution to the fight against cancer, with an emphasis on researchers whose achievements span the spectrum of health research, from the laboratory to clinical care to health systems and public policy.
One $50,000 prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure for cancer. Among the criteria that will be considered is a distinguished record of translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications, forging partnerships with scientists and others to foster cancer research or to implement discoveries, and cultivating future leaders in the field. The prize is awarded with the expectation that the recipient will continue to demonstrate excellence in his/her field of work and serve as leaders to other scientists in the field, sharing his/her insights for years to come.
Clinical Faculty Award for Career Excellence in Clinical Teaching | Deadline: 4:00 pm, February 27, 2015
This award recognizes senior Clinical Faculty members who have demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching over the course of their careers. Three awards are available. Each award consists of a financial prize of $1,000.
Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching | Deadline: 4:00 pm, February 27, 2015
Three awards are available, which recognize excellence in teaching by Clinical Faculty members at a Clinical Academic Campus. Each award has a financial prize of $1,000.
Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Community Practice Teaching | Deadline: 4:00 pm, February 27, 2015
This award recognizes Clinical Faculty throughout B.C. who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and made an educational impact in a local community. One award for each of the four regions in B.C. is available, with a financial prize of $1,000.
Excellence in Mentoring Early Career Faculty Awards | Deadline: 4:30 pm, March 6, 2015
Up to three awards are given to faculty members who have formally been identified as mentors and who exemplify a deep commitment to fostering the professional and personal development of faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers. The Awards for Excellence in Mentoring Early Career Faculty are made in recognition of a faculty member’s proven ability to offer appropriate guidance, feedback and support with a financial prize of $1,000.

Applegarth Staff Service Awards | Deadline: 4:30 pm, March 13, 2015
The Applegarth Staff Service Awards recognize excellence in personal achievements and outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Medicine. All staff members who are Faculty of Medicine employees (non-faculty) are eligible.
Three awards are available, with a financial prize of $500 each:
- One award is available for Management and Professional (M&P) staff
- One award is available Secretarial/Clerical staff
- One award is available for Non-Union Technician & Research Assistant staff
Margolese National Brain & Heart Disorders Prizes | Deadline: 4:00 pm, March 24, 2015
The Margolese National Brain and Heart Disorders Prizes are awarded to Canadian citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration or cure of brain or heart disorders. The expectation is that prize recipients will continue to demonstrate excellence in their field of work
Two prizes of $50,000 will be awarded annually, one in each of the two categories:
- The Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize
- The Margolese National Heart Disorders Prize
Distinguished Achievement Awards | Deadline: 4:30 pm, May 3, 2015
Distinguished Achievement Awards recognize individuals whose performance during the assessment period (Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2014) was particularly meritorious. Full-time faculty members will be selected at an annual meeting of Department Heads/School Directors to receive additional merit as a Faculty of Medicine award.
There are six categories of awards and up to two awards per category will be granted. The award categories are:
- Excellence in education (up to two awards)
- Excellence basic science research (up to two awards)
- Excellence in clinical or applied research (up to two awards)
- Service to the University and community (up to two awards)
- Overall excellence – early career (up to two awards)
- Overall excellence – senior faculty (up to two awards)
