We are writing to you now, on behalf of the Clinical Advisory Committee of the Canadian Rare Disease Models and Mechanisms Network (RDMM), to make you aware of our official launch last week.
The goal of the RDMM Network is to link clinicians and clinician scientists who have discovered a new rare disease gene with a basic scientist who is able to carry out functional analysis on an orthologous gene in a model system. The goal is to make these connections at the time of the disease gene discovery.
The Network will catalyze establishment of these connections, and provide a $25,000 catalyst grant to the model organism lab as seed funds for immediate collaborative experiments in validating the disease gene mutation(s).
All the information about the RDMM Network can be found at the Network website:
The 25K award goes to the model organism lab to do the work on your gene of interest as part of a collaboration, the money cannot go to your own lab.
You can apply with a good idea of what model organism and laboratory is best suited to study your gene or you can have no idea and the scientific advisory board will try to find a suitable match for you using our database; in the end you have the final say if the ‘connection’ is a go or not.
The network will study several types of projects:
Novel genetically validated genes where timely functional insight will improve the quality of the publication;
Genes that appear causative in a single family but additional functional work is needed to support causality;
Genes known to cause rare diseases but now associated with a new disease and mechanism; and,
Known genes responsible for a rare disease where there is therapeutic opportunity.
90 grants will be awarded over 3 years.
There are no specific deadlines for applications; they will be reviewed frequently.
If you have projects that are suitable please suggest them to us using the short application form on the website. Don’t hesitate to contact one of us with questions.
