Federal Research + Innovation Initiatives Consultation | UBC Research + International
In June 2016, two separate but related advisory panels were announced that will advise the federal government on its review of fundamental science in Canada and its innovation agenda.
UBC will develop a submission to each of these panels. Members of the UBC research community across every discipline are invited to participate in a campus-wide consultation to share their advice and perspective on the input UBC provides to the federal government.
Individuals may also submit their ideas directly to the advisory panels by following the links in the text below.
Canada’s Fundamental Science Review
The federal science review panel is seeking input on how to optimize support for fundamental science in Canada. Within the panel’s scope are issues of international best practices in funding, barriers for early career researchers, and encouraging “Canadian scientists to take on bold new research challenges”. More information on the fundamental science review can be found here: http://www.sciencereview.ca/eic/site/059.nsf/eng/home
Building an inclusive and innovative Canada
In its focus on “building an inclusive and innovative Canada”, the government has identified six action areas which will form its innovation agenda. These areas include promoting an entrepreneurial and creative society, building world-leading clusters and partnerships, and growing companies and accelerating clean growth. More information on the government’s innovation agenda can be found here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/062.nsf/eng/home
It also serves noting that we anticipate an additional federal review which will seek input on how best to structure and support incubators and accelerators in Canada. We will share further information about this review as and when it becomes available.
The UBC consultation will take the form of three roundtable meetings. At these meetings we would like your input on the issues relevant to the mandates of the two federal initiatives.
Interested parties can also contribute to UBC’s consultation through submitting a written response to the questions using the form below.
The questions that we are seeking input on during these sessions can be found here.
In answering these questions, please consider:
- The consultation is in regards to the four federal granting councils: SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC and CFI.
- Best practices in BC, Canada and beyond that could inform UBC’s submission to these reviews
The roundtable meetings are planned as follows:
- Tuesday, August 30, 1.00-3.00 pm
- Thursday, September 1, 1.00-3.00 pm
- Tuesday, September 6, 1.00-3.00 pm
Thank you for engaging with us in this way – this is an important opportunity to shape the federal research agenda, and we appreciate your interest and commitment in ensuring UBC’s priorities are clearly articulated to the federal government.
