Subject: SPARC Support for Discovery Grant Applications
For the upcoming Discovery Grant (DG) competition, SPARC is offering a number of support services for UBC applicants.
Small Review Panels
SPARC is introducing a new DG support process this year—the Small Review Panels. Each applicant will review three of their peers’ proposals, and will receive 3 sets of written reviews in turn. Panels will be formed mainly according to applicants’ evaluation groups, with a range of DG experience represented as much as possible. All applicants will then have the opportunity to engage in a face-to-face discussion of their proposal at the Small Review Panels meeting, held in September 14 or 15 (applicants can choose between 3 sessions depending on their schedule). Applicants will need to register on SPARC’s DG SRP website website by August 12 to be included in the program, and will also be required to submit their draft proposal to the SPARC office via email by September 5. For more information, please contact Joanne Moszynski.
SPARC will be conducting a detailed review of DG applications and NSERC Canadian Common CVs, where SPARC staff and participating faculty will review applications based on the standard NSERC selection criteria. This service is available to all, though we encourage all new applicants and Assistant Professors to take part. To register for a SPARC Review, please submit your NOI to Alexander Unterberger by Tuesday, August 23, 2016. Note because of the large number of applications, we are limited in the number of SPARC Reviews we can conduct so please register early. If our review capacity is reached, we will close the registration early. Full draft applications are due to Alexander Unterberger for review by Tuesday, September 20, 2016. Application reviews will be returned shortly afterwards.
NSERC Evaluation Group Roundtable
SPARC will host an informative roundtable discussion with UBC faculty who serve on the NSERC Evaluation Groups for the Discovery Grant Program. We invite you to attend and participate in discussions about the review process, what makes a successful application and other topics. The roundtable discussion is scheduled for September 12, 2016, from 1:30–4:30PM in Room 3340 of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Building. Registration is required, so please visit the event announcement webpage to register. For more information, please contact Alexander Unterberger.
Sample Discovery Grant Library
Finally, we have updated our Sample Grant Library (CWL required for access) with over 20 sample grants from successful UBC applicants in the recent 2015/2016 DG competition. Please visit the library to view successful applications across all 12 Evaluation Groups.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
All the best,
Alex and Joanne
