POLICY #3 (Discrimination and Harassment)
On December 6, 2016, the Board of Governors approved the amendments to Policy #3 (Discrimination and Harassment).
The amendments to the Policy reflect the change in the BC Human Rights Code by adding “gender identity or expression” to the list of enumerated grounds covered by the Code in section 2.1, and removing “gender identity” and “gender expression” from the list of examples provided as interpreted grounds under the ground of “sex” in section 2.2.

POLICY #49 (Pre-Retirement Reduced Appointment Agreements for Staff)
On December 6, 2016, the Board of Governors approved the amendment of Policy #49 (Pre-Retirement Reduced Appointment Agreements). This Policy was formerly called Reduced Workload/Responsibility Appointment – Non-Academic Staff.
Policy #49 provides pre-retirement options for eligible staff who wish to work in more flexible employment arrangements and at the same time balance the University’s need for succession planning and continuity of operations. Since its adoption, Policy #49 has provided long-term staff with the opportunity to work on reduced workload appointments while maintaining full pension and other specified benefits. The amendment of Policy #49 updates the language in the context of the elimination of mandatory retirement and clarifies the intention and application of Policy #49. The amendment retains the same eligibility criteria and benefits under these types of appointments as under previous Policy #49 but now explicitly connects them to a pre-determined retirement date and requires a fixed term to a maximum of three years immediately prior to retirement.

POLICY #113 (Endowment Management)
On December 6, 2016, the Board of Governors approved amendments to the Procedures to Policy #113 (Endowment Management).
Policy #113 and related procedures governs the management of the University’s endowments. The Procedures have been amended to give the Responsible Executive authority within a specific set of parameters to adjust the annual allocation of an endowment fund where the fund’s stabilization account deviates excessively from zero.

POLICY #26 (Designation of Acting Administrative Heads of Unit) and POLICIES #22, #23, #24, #34 and #43
On December 6, 2016, the Board of Governors approved the amendment of Policy #26 (Designation of Acting Administrative Heads of Unit) and the consequential amendments of Policy #22 (Appointment and Extension of Appointments for Heads of Academic Units), Policy #23 (Extension of Appointments for Deans and Principals), Policy #24 (Extension of Appointments for Designated Senior Academic Administrators), Policy #34 (Appointment and Extension of Appointment of Administrative Vice-Presidents), and Policy #43 (Extension of Appointments for Registrar and Librarians).
The amendment of Policy #26 and consequential amendments of the specified Board policies pertaining to the extension of appointment for certain senior positions (the “Extension Policies”) reconcile a number of inconsistencies amongst existing Board policies with respect to pro tem and acting appointments. The amendments consolidate the designation of acting administrative heads of unit for temporary absences within Policy #26 and retain the provisions with respect to pro tem appointments for vacancies of positions within the Extension Policies. In addition, the process within Policy #26 has been updated to reflect current practice and the language has been clarified to provide greater guidance and clarity for both the individual making the designation and the designate. Policy #26 was formerly called Acting Administrators in Cases of Absence.
