I am pleased to share with you two recent leadership appointments:
Dr. Jan Dutz has been appointed Head, Department of Dermatology and Skin Science, effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022.
Dr. Dutz is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science. As a Senior Scientist with the Child and Family Research Institute, his research focus is the skin immune system and the manipulation of this system to promote immune responses and induce tolerance. Dr. Dutz is a rheumatologist and dermatologist with special clinical interest in the cutaneous manifestations of autoimmunity and rheumatic disease. He also works as a dermatological oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency, where his practice is restricted to malignant melanoma and skin lymphoma. Dr. Dutz is committed to the development of translational research in skin disease in Canada, as evidenced by his roles as president of the Canadian Society of Investigative Dermatology and the North American Rheumatology-Dermatology Society. He is also past member of the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) Advisory Board.
His leadership follows Dr. Harvey Lui, who will conclude his second term on June 30, 2017. I would like to thank Dr. Lui for his leadership and contributions to the UBC Faculty of Medicine during this time.
Ms. Susan Murphy has been appointed Head, Department of Physical Therapy, effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020, following her appointment as Interim Head since January 1, 2016.
Ms. Murphy is a Senior Instructor in the Department of Physical Therapy. She trained as a physical therapist and started her academic career teaching in the clinical setting. She has held a number of leadership roles in the department over the past two decades, including terms as Acting Division Head of Physiotherapy from 2002-2006 and as Associate Head of Clinical Education from 2008-2015. Since January 2016, she has been Interim Head of the Department. Prior to working full time at UBC, Ms. Murphy worked clinically for many years, with a focus on critical care. Her educational leadership and scholarship focuses on clinical education, the teaching of professionalism, and the use of standardized patients in physiotherapy, and she has recently been appointed as a scholar within the Centre for Health Education Scholarship.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jan Dutz and Ms. Susan Murphy to their new appointments.
