ANNOUNCEMENT:

Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and UBC Faculty Partnerships in International Visiting Research Scholars – Call for Applications

Deadline: May 1, 2012

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies is offering 15 partnerships of $10,000 to bring some of the world’s best scholars to UBC. This new initiative allows the Peter Wall Institute to partner with UBC faculties, departments and research centres to attract outstanding scholars to work collaboratively with UBC faculty members on innovative research. The International Visiting Research Scholar can visit anytime during the 2012-2013 academic year.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES:

Canadian Celiac Association – J. A. Campbell Research Grant

Deadline: April 30, 2012

A grant to a maximum of $25,000 is offered for research projects in Canada related to Celiac Disease and/or Gluten Sensitivity. While open to all types of relevant research, our focus in 2012 will be studies that address gluten sensitivity or socio-economic factors impacting how people live with their condition. Canadian Celiac Association – J. A. Campbell Young Investigator Award

Deadline: April 30, 2012

The J.A. Campbell Young Investigator Award is $5,000 for Research in Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity and /or socio-economic factors impacting how people live with their condition. This award is available to individuals under the age of 35 or not more than five (5) years after graduation from a recognized Medical or Health Sciences School, University Undergraduate, or Graduate Training Program. Branch for International Surgery – Global Surgery Research Awards

Deadline: May 27, 2012

The Branch Global Surgery Research Awards provide financial assistance to a surgical resident (General Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Anesthesia, Urology, Obstetrics & Gynecology) at the University of British Columbia so that they may gain valuable international fieldwork experience in the burden of unmet surgical care in developing countries. The funds have been generously provided through the Branch’s alliance with the Canadian Network of International Surgery (CNIS) through a CIDA grant.

Up to four grants of $2500 will be provided and can be used to support travel costs. Funds can be used for research projects taking place anytime from summer quarter 2012 up to, and including spring quarter 2013.

Applicants will be selected based on the following considerations:

  1. the strength and quality of the project proposal
  2. evidence of the educational value for Resident and host country
  3. focus on surgical care in a resource limited setting
  4. research results have potential to be disseminated –publications and conferences
  5. evidence of field planning and approval from host country and recommendation of the UBC Program Director

AWARDS AND HONOURS

UBC Faculty of Medicine –Distinguished Medical Research Lecturer: Leaders In Medical Discovery

Each year, two Faculty Lectureships are held, one from the basic sciences and one from clinical sciences. The Research Council Committee is currently soliciting nominations for the 2012 Distinguished Medical Lectures. Nominations in either or both categories are encouraged.
