We are delighted to announce that Dr. George Hadjipavlou has been appointed to the IMH position of Assistant Professor, Psychotherapy in the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia.
Dr. Hadjipavlou has been practicing as a full-time psychiatrist and completed his residency in psychiatry at UBC in 2008. He first joined our Department as a Clinical Instructor in July 2009. He sees patients through the Mood Disorders Centre at UBC Hospital, and at the Native Health Clinic in the downtown eastside, under the Cross Cultural Psychiatry Program at Vancouver General Hospital.
In this new academic role, Dr. Hadjipavlou’s focus will be to develop an independent research program and be a leader in Psychotherapy for the IMH. He will be devoting some of his time to the Psychotherapy program for clinical research, education and clinical care related to a Psychotherapy Training Clinic and to the Native Health Clinic the for activities related to clinical research, education and patient care.
The Department of Psychiatry and the Institute of Mental Health conducted a lengthy and in-depth recruitment process to find the best person for the position and we are excited that Dr. Hadjipavlou will be joining us in a new role. His experience as a psychiatrist working in the Downtown East Side and developing treatment protocols and standards (CANMAT Task Force), will fill a unique niche in the Department. His training in anthropology and cultural issues is an asset that he has applied successfully to issues in the Downtown East Side and has established a good reputation in that community that will help fulfill UBC’s mission of making the University directly relevant to communities.
