Regional Department of Psychiatry has arranged for Dr. Michael First to present an overview of both the major changes and some of the controversies related to the newly released DSM-5. Dr. First is from Columbia in New York, who has been involved closely in DSM and SCID development and has written several books in this area including an upcoming book on DSM-5.
We will host an Extraordinary Regional Rounds on July 2nd from 08:30 to 09:30 and two identical 3 hour workshops on July 2nd from 10:00 – 13:00 and July 3rd from 09:00 – Noon to update staff on changes in DSM-5. These rounds and workshops will be held at Paetzold Auditorium at VGH and broadcast through videoconference to various sites. Registration for the Paetzold workshops is thru CCRS and is mandatory. Since space is limited, VCH, PHC and BC Children’s staff will have the priority for registration. If space is available, it will be opened up for staff from outside these facilities.
We will also have subsequent workshops at each COC in the fall and these will be run by Dr. Ian Forbes who has been trained on DSM-5.
A revised document highlighting the changes in diagnostic categories and criteria is attached
