To: UBC Vancouver students, faculty and staff
I am sharing with you today the interim report of the UBC Point Grey Campus Safety Working Group, which I appointed last November to address safety concerns following the six sexual assaults that took place on campus between April and October 2013.
You will remember that we went through a turbulent and difficult time as a community last year, coping with a sense of heightened danger, yet working very hard to assure each other’s safety and take back the environment in which we live, study and work.
We soon realized however, that we needed to take a deeper look at our actual safety, consider best practices among comparable peer institutions, and outline the actions needed to enhance what is already a very safe campus by any measure.
But before the UBC administration commits to any action, we need to hear from you.
The interim report and recommendations of the Working Group are available on this dedicated website [http://vpstudents.ubc.ca/2014/02/07/improving-campus-safety/]. Please take a look at the report and respond to the online feedback form provided. You have until February 25, 2014 to do so.
My commitment to you is that your feedback will inform the actions we take, building on the strong foundation already in place in terms of existing programs, services and community relationships. We expect to be announcing initial actions in March 2014.
A safe campus is one where the entire community – students, faculty, staff and residents – cares and therefore is motivated to act on each other’s behalf. Education, engagement and dialogue are key to fostering this community spirit.
This is an ongoing conversation we are having together. For the engagement to be meaningful and lead to changes that matter, you need to get involved.
I look forward to your thoughts.
