Re: Leadership of the Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Gavin Stuart will complete his second term as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the end of August, 2015. Dr. Stuart has served in this role since 2003 and, following his reappointment in 2009, took on the additional role of Vice-Provost Health. A search for his successor as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine will begin shortly, with the establishment of a President’s Advisory Committee that will include representation from across the Faculty and in accordance with Board and Senate Policy #21.
Dr. Stuart’s accomplishments during his tenure as Dean and Vice-Provost have been truly outstanding. He has provided tremendous leadership to the Faculty of Medicine during a time of unprecedented and challenging expansion. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Stuart spearheaded efforts with government, health authorities and academic partners to oversee the successful implementation of Canada’s first system of fully distributed medical education, expansion of health professional programs, and the enhancement of health research across British Columbia. Through these efforts, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine has established a provincial presence with staff, faculty, learners and alumni working together to improve health at university and hospital campuses across British Columbia. Research success within the Faculty has continued to grow each year.
In addition to carrying out his duties as Dean and Vice-Provost, Dr. Stuart continues to be an active teacher, clinician and researcher. His clinical research and publications have been in the area of gynecologic cancer, including population-based screening programs and clinical trials such as therapeutic interventions in gynecologic cancer.
The timeline and process for the search for a new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine includes:
- May, 2014 – search consultants conduct consultations within the Faculty
- May, 2014 – establishment of the advisory committee for the Selection of a new Dean (chaired by me)
- June, 2014 – advisory committee meets to develop position profile
- Summer and fall, 2014 – search consultants “in the market”, conducting the search
- Fall, 2014: advisory committee considers potential candidates/conducts interviews
- Early spring 2015 – selection of a new Dean
I have written to the Registrar requesting the initiation of the call for nominations and election of faculty and students to serve on the advisory committee for the search for a new Dean of Medicine. The executive search firm, Boyden, has been retained to support the work of the President’s Advisory Committee. Mr. Brent Cameron and Mr. Ken Werker, managing partners in the firm, will conduct consultations once the Advisory Committee has been established, to give them a better understanding of the Faculty as they begin to build the position profile; the key opportunities and challenges; and the ideal characteristics of the next Dean.
I shall be pleased to update the members of the Faculty as the search progresses. Information will soon be placed on the Vice-President Academic’s website (www.vpacademic.ubc.ca).
