To the UBC community,
We are pleased to announce the creation of the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health (CEIH). UBC Senate approved this Centre on November 20, 2013, to commence operations on January 1, 2014. The CEIH is now actively pursuing its mandate.
The proposal for the CEIH has been in development since 2012, with contributions from across the health disciplines at UBC, in consultation with faculty, staff and students, and also with community organizations from around the province.
Housed in the multi-disciplinary UBC School of Population and Public Health, the CEIH will be a single coordinating point for Aboriginal related health initiatives within UBC, as well as a contact for health organizations external to UBC. The CEIH will work with Aboriginal leadership across British Columbia and the country to improve wellness, health care and outcomes for Aboriginal patients, and will generally advance the health of Aboriginal people through innovative thinking, research and education. The CEIH’s key goals are the recruitment and education of Indigenous health professionals to address persistent health disparities, to promote self-determination by increasing Aboriginal leadership in health and health care, and the provision of the training necessary for all health professionals to work more effectively with Aboriginal people and organizations. The CEIH will offer strategic coordination and guidance to functions already operating in many UBC locations, and provide assistance in developing initiatives that would otherwise be difficult to develop or maintain across units. The Centre will assume the responsibility for key programming previously offered out of the Division of Aboriginal People’s Health and the Institute for Aboriginal Health such as the UBC Learning Circle and the Summer Science Program, respectively.
The CEIH embodies the UBC Place and Promise commitment to Aboriginal Engagement, and advances the UBC Aboriginal Strategic Plan in an important way.
