On Behalf of the Directors of Curriculum and Assessment
June marks the start of the detailed course development process. The design and implementation of individual courses will be an ongoing process over the next several years. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to getting us to this point. We are excited to move forward with planning the delivery of the renewed Year 1 which will launch in Fall 2015.
Senate proposal update
Visit the Curriculum Renewal Homepage to view a three minute video describing the detailed Senate Proposal. This proposal builds on the Renewed Curriculum Framework that was approved by Senate in February 2014 and includes additional details such as course syllabi and learning outcomes.
The proposal has been approved by MDUEC, MDUREX, Faculty Executive, and Full Faculty. The next steps are to bring the proposal forward to the UBC Senate sub-committees in August, followed by the full UBC Senate in October 2014. Full approval will allow us to implement the renewed program and start admitting students.
Renewed Year 1 development and implementation
The course development process will be guided by the framework outlined in the detailed Senate Proposal as we turn our focus to the design and delivery of renewed first year courses.
Two trial week development sessions were held on May 28 and June 9. The purpose of these sessions was to pilot the process for course week development with Course Leads, Systems and Themes Leads, Assessment Leads, and other representatives.
The feedback from the trial sessions will be used to refine the process and set up a development structure over the coming months. For more information, view the Course Development Preview blog post.
An overview of the renewed programmatic assessments can be found on the new Assessment page under the Resources menu. Key competencies organized around CanMEDS roles will be assessed through a combination the following four modalities:
Written Examinations (multiple choice and progress test exams)
Workplace-Based Assessments (WBA)
Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE)
Details will continue to be added as the Assessment Implementation Team maps out how each assessment type will be integrated to measure course outcomes and yearly milestones.
