Dear Colleagues .I would appreciate your feedback on the UBC Dept of Psychiatry’s Lucid Book Club and Reading series. This has been a (roughly) monthly event at UBC Green College the past two years – see https://blogs.ubc.ca/lucid/ and it’s time for Faculty feedback. In brief, to-date attendees appear to have varied in terms of their learning expectations:
- Some Faculty members are looking for a traditional ‘ book club experience’. This is envisioned as a relatively small closed group with meetings rotating at each member’s home. Think wine, cheese and an informal discussions – frequency would likely be somewhere between 1 to 2 months. Books selected would have a ‘psychiatric’ theme.
- Some Faculty members are looking for feedback on their own creative writing (fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry). Think of a relatively small closed group that would ‘workshop’ their fiction as follows: each individual would circulate a sample of their writing to other members of the group (the usual model would be up to a maximum of 20 pages circulated at least one week in advance). Each member would be expected to (gently!) critique each other’s writing. Ideally, an established writer would facilitate the discussions. Frequency of meetings would likely be 1 to 2 months and those interested in participating should recognize that their participation would represent a significant time commitment.
- Some Faculty members are looking for a traditional ‘author reading series’. With this model, local authors would be invited to read from a recently published work related to a mental health theme. These events would also be open to the public and would involve a Q and A and a chance to purchase a signed copy of the book from the author. (As examples, over the last 2 years Lucid has had a number of readings from local authors including Annnabel Lyon, Craig Boyko, Daniel Kalla, George Fetherling, Wayne Grady, Renée Sarojini Saklikar and Timothy Taylor).
As we move forward, I would very much appreciate if Faculty could let me know if they are interested (with no commitment at this point) in attending any (or all!) of the following: 1. a book club. 2. a writing group 3. a reading series. Please email me directly at Harry.Karlinsky@vch.ca (any additional comments or feedback would be welcome). I will also be canvassing our residents with respect to their interests. Cheers, Harry
