Dr. Ric Procyshyn acknowledged by the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for his Research Accomplishments

On September 26, 2014, the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences will host a new event dedicated to profiling the research accomplishments of some of its most distinguished alumni. Titled “Agents of Change Research Symposium: The Global Impact of UBC Pharm Sci Alumni,” the full-day symposium is designed to showcase the impact UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences alumni have made in the world of pharmaceuticals, medical science and patient care.

The formal speaking program, commencing at 8:45 a.m. with opening remarks by Dr. Helen Burt, UBC Associate VP – Research & International, includes presentations by seven world-class researchers:

• “Bringing Academic Pharmacy to Qatar: The Grand Experiment”
Dr. Peter Jewesson, BSc(Pharm)’78, PhD’86, Consultant, Professor and Dean Emeritus

• “Optimizing Energy Metabolism as an Approach to Treat Ischemic Heart Disease and Heart Failure”
Dr. Gary Lopaschuk, BSc(Pharm)’78, MSc’80, PhD’83, Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, University of Alberta

• “Breast Cancer Genes and Cardiovascular Regulation: Common Pathways” Presented by Pfizer Injectables.
Dr. Subodh Verma, MSc’93, PhD’97, cardiac surgeon, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pharmacology, University of Toronto, Director, Traineeship in Atherosclerosis, Canada Research Chair in Atherosclerosis

• “Translational Research for Optimizing Therapy Using Approaches of Nanoformulation Development and Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Correlation”
Dr. Diana Chow, PhD’81, Professor of Pharmaceutics, Director, Institute of Drug Education and Research (IDER), College of Pharmacy, University of Houston

“The Faculty is thrilled to have seven of our most distinguished alumni share their experiences and expertise,” says Dr. Michael Coughtrie, professor and dean, UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. “We believe it’s fundamentally important to recognize the many positive impacts our alumni have made to the field of health care and we’re excited to showcase and learn from their accomplishments at this exciting new event.”
