I am pleased to advise of several recent appointment updates in the Education portfolio:
Acting Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, Northern Medical Program
Dr. Laura Brough has been appointed Acting Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, Northern Medical Program (NMP) effective November 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016 while Dr. Leigh Hunsinger is on maternity leave.
Dr. Brough is a graduate of the Prince George Family Medicine Residency Program. Early in her career, she worked as a general practitioner and has spent the last 14 years working in emergency medicine and a clinic dedicated to those with eating disorders. In 2005, she joined the Department of Family Practice as a Clinical Instructor. In her interim role, Dr. Brough will ensure personal and academic support for NMP students, working closely with Dr. Janette McMillan, Associate Dean, Student Affairs and Dr. Paul Winwood, Regional Associate Dean, Northern BC.
Assistant Dean, Students Affairs, Island Medical Program
Dr. Fraser Black has been appointed Assistant Dean, MD Undergraduate Program, Students Affairs, Island Medical Program (IMP) effective July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019, following the long-standing leadership of Dr. Darlene Hammell.
Dr. Black, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice, has been involved with the IMP since the beginning, previously as a PBL tutor and as Discipline Specific (Palliative Care) Site Coordinator, and currently as a Year 4 Course Director (PMP). Dr. Black completed his MD and postgraduate training at the University of Calgary and has worked as a family physician for several years in the areas of palliative care and inner-city medicine. In his new role, Dr. Black will provide personal and academic support for IMP students, working closely with Dr. Janette McMillan, Associate Dean, Student Affairs and Dr. Bruce Wright, Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island.
Associate Director Curriculum, Years 3 and 4, MD Undergraduate Program
Dr. Adrian Yee has accepted the position of Associate Director Curriculum, Years 3 and 4 for the MD Undergraduate Program starting February 1, 2016. This follows the interim leadership from Dr. Michael Curry, who has kindly agreed to provide ongoing continuity in this position until the on-site accreditation visit in February is completed.
Dr. Yee joins this role following his tenure as Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education for the Island Medical Program. In this new position, Dr. Yee will provide provincial leadership for the integration, coordination and quality of curricular components across Years 3 and 4, including playing a major role in the development of the renewed curriculum.
Assistant Dean, Northern Medical Program
Further to the announcement regarding Dr. Geoff Payne’s acceptance of the interim VP Research, UNBC position, Dr. Payne has decided to step down as the NMP Assistant Dean effective February 29, 2016. During his tenure, Dr. Payne has significantly enhanced the education of NMP medical students and has provided leadership and developed supporting infrastructure for the research activities of NMP faculty. The position of VP Research is an incredible opportunity for Dr. Payne and one that will require his full attention. We wish him all the best as he transitions into his new role.
