Announcement – Cheryl Holmes
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Cheryl Holmes as Interim Assistant Dean, Curriculum, effective January 1, 2017.
Cheryl will oversee the development and delivery of the four years of the MD undergraduate curriculum across the province, including curriculum renewal activities. She will provide provincial academic leadership, directing the work of the Associate Directors of Curriculum, providing strategic direction to the Curriculum Management team and working with clinical leaders to build sufficient capacity at clinical teaching sites. Cheryl will also participate in program-wide activities to ensure the maintenance of accreditation standards and will be responsible for monitoring compliance with the relevant CACMS recommendations for the MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP).
Dr. Cheryl Holmes is an Intensivist and Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine’s Division of Critical Care. She obtained her MD from UBC in 1984. After ten years of general practice, she enrolled in Internal Medicine at UBC and went on to complete a Critical Care fellowship. Since 2001, Dr. Holmes has practiced critical care medicine at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) and has been involved in the training of medical students, residents, fellows and allied healthcare students. In 2008, Dr. Holmes became the Site Director for the Southern Medical Program (SMP), responsible for overseeing the progress of the Year 3 medical students at KGH. In 2013, Dr. Holmes completed a Masters of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning Best Thesis for her work entitled “Harnessing the Hidden Curriculum; a Four Step Competency Approach.” In 2015 she received the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award.
I would also like to thank Dr. Adam Peets, who will be stepping aside from this role effective December 31st, 2016. He made an incredible contribution during his term and we wish him every success in his future pursuits within the Faculty.
Please join me in welcoming Cheryl to her new leadership role in the UBC Faculty of Medicine MDUP.
