I am regularly notified about online businesses that have exposed (lost) their customer’s information, to people other than themselves. Depending on the site, the exposed information can include login credentials (account name/e-mail and password), password hints, credit card details, birth date, address and social security numbers. Some major business related sites include:
- Mid 2012 – DropBox exposed login e-mail addresses and passwords
- October 2013 – Adobe exposed 153 million login email addresses, password hints, passwords and usernames
- May 2016 – LinkedIn exposed 164 million login email addresses and passwords.
Microsoft Regional Director Troy Hunt has created a website that compiles all know breaches instances and allows you to search to see if your own logins are exposed. I recommend that you go to https://haveibeenpwned.com and run a search with each of your e-mail accounts, at least a couple times per year.
