Organized by Dr. Joseph Tham, a 3 hour course on “Understanding and Treating Traumatic Brain Injury for the Psychiatrist: The Spectrum of Care from Mild to Severe” was well attended and received.
Dr. Will Panenka lectured on Post-Concussive Syndrome and other TBI complications including CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). Dr. Islam Hassan presented on the Neuropsychiatry of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy including the psychosis that can occur with seizures. Dr. Brenda Kosaka’s lecture was on the Clinical Cognitive Issues Common to the Spectrum of TBI. She reviewed some of the common problems patients report and addressed possible rehab approaches for these problems. She also identified a cognitive complaint that is not clinically significant. Dr. Joseph Tham ended the session with the Neuropsychiatry of Moderate to Severe Brain Injury. He discussed treatment options with this level of TBI and also reviewed the program and environment at Alder which is in Vancouver. Questions and conversations continued on for about an hour after the session ended.
