Sustainability Student Network Information Session

Ecological Farming Short Course
Two farmers with 55+ years of farming experience are coming from Oregon to the UBC Farm on September 29th and 30th to offer three special workshops in ecological farming. Learn more and register.
Liu Scholars Program
Liu Scholars have access to funding and support for student-driven collaborative activities with additional opportunities to develop networks and exchange knowledge with world-renowned visiting fellows, faculty and other scholars. Applications close on September 25th, 2017.
2018 UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture
The UBC Farm Practicum is an experiential-learning program designed for aspiring farmers, urban gardeners, environmental educators, and students with an interest in applying their learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems. It can be taken in six months (April-October) or four months (April-August), and as a non-credit certificate program, or for 6-9 academic credits. Applications are due on November 5th.
Life in Colour Date: Thursday, September 21
Time: 5:00pm – 8:30pm Location: Beaty Biodiversity MuseumCome by for a night at the museum and celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition. This art exhibition has wall-sized murals for you to colour in with art by Angela Gooliaff. Admission is by donation between 5:00-8:30 pm. Light snacks and a cash bar will be available in addition to many family-friendly activities.
15th Annual FarmAde Date: Friday, September 22

Location: UBC Farm, 3461 Ross Drive
FarmAde is an annual UBC event at the UBC Farm to celebrate the end of the harvest season and to greet the beginning of the academic year. It brings together UBC community members of all ages to celebrate community, local food, local Vancouver talent and to dance! Event details.
Changemaker Series 2017: Affordable Housing Date: Tuesday, September 26

UBC Future of Food Global Dialogue Series Date: Starting Wednesday, September 27
Time: 12:30pm – 1:30pm

A campus-wide initiative launched in 2016, the UBC Future of Food Global Dialogue Seriesbrings together food security and sustainability experts from home and across the globe to regularly engage the UBC community and the public around the Global Food System. These 1 hour talks will take place throughout the year, starting this month. Catch the next speaker, Dr. Amy Hanser, on September 27th.
UBC Sustainability Scholar’s Conference “Research to Action: Advancing Urban Sustainability” Date: Wednesday, September 27
Time: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Location: CIRS, 2260 West Mall
UBC graduate students will lead a discussion about the applied research projects they have undertaken to address urban sustainability issues through their participation in the UBC Sustainability and Greenest City Scholars Programs. Moderated by experts from UBC and our community partner organizations, project researchers will present their projects in concurrent panel sessions throughout the afternoon. Register to join.

Vancouver’s Largest Clothing Swap Date: Friday, October 6
Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm
Location: CIRS, 2260 West Mall Vancouver’s Largest Clothing Swap is coming to UBC this October 6th! Simply bring in 10 articles of clothing, and take home unlimited bags of clothes. Consume eco-consciously, clean out your closet, donate to charity, and change your wardrobe all through one event.

Party Safari is UBC’s free Party Festival, designed to spread healthy party culture and celebrate World Mental Health Day! The festival features a Morning Yoga Rave, a Silent Disco, and a Guided Party Tour, and was one of the projects awarded a UTown Community Animation Grant. Expect a full day of upbeat activities, interactive workshops, socialization, and partying for health (indoors and outdoors). Wear your dancing shoes. Learn more and register.
The Three Stages of Environmentalism Date: Saturday, October 21

Join the Environmental Sciences Students’ Association (ESSA) for their beginning of the year keystone event, The Three Stages of Environmentalism. Four speakers, Grace Hermansen, Briony Penn, Joan Phillip, and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, will share their stories and experiences of activism and environmentalism in hopes of bridging the gap between age groups surrounding issues of environmental protection. If you are hosting a sustainability-related event and are looking for volunteers, you can submit your opportunity to the Sustainability Student Network (SSN), an online resource where students find out about volunteer opportunities in the sustainability community.
