I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Cheryl Holmes as Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME), effective October 1, 2017.
In her role as Associate Dean, UGME, Dr. Holmes will manage undergraduate medical education within the UBC Faculty of Medicine, ensuring medical education activities are aligned with the strategic priorities and plan of the Faculty. She will work with senior leadership at all sites to provide overall curricular oversight of all four years of the UGME program.
Dr. Cheryl Holmes is an Intensivist and Clinical Associate Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine’s Division of Critical Care. Previously, Dr. Holmes served as Interim Assistant Dean, Curriculum and before that Site Director for the Year 3 Clerkship at the Southern Medical Program in Kelowna.
She obtained her MD from UBC in 1984, and after ten years of general practice, she enrolled in Internal Medicine at UBC and went on to complete a Critical Care fellowship. Since 2001, Dr. Holmes has practiced critical care medicine at Kelowna General Hospital where she is involved in clinical education of medical students, residents, and fellows in the ICU. In 2013, Dr. Holmes completed a Masters of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, earning Best Thesis for her work entitled Harnessing the Hidden Curriculum; a Four Step Competency Approach. In 2015 she received the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award. In collaboration with the Centre for Education Scholarship at UBC, Dr. Holmes is engaged in the ongoing research project: The Student Voice Project.
