An attempt was recently made, to impersonate one of our faculty members, by e-mail. The faculty member is president of a professional association and the email to that association’s treasurer was requesting details to arrange a transfer of funds. Luckily, the treasurer was suspicious and contacted our faculty member by separate means to confirm.
These phishing attempts are reported to Psychiatry IT on a fairly regular basis. The targets are most often high ranking department members, who typically have the most access to financial and personal records. This variant is know as spear phishing.
