Join us to witness the historic opening of UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre
On April 9 at 10:00am, UBC will mark the formal opening of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, on our Vancouver campus. This will be a historic event, and I encourage you (where possible) to attend or watch the live webcast.
Among several other purposes, the centre will provide Indian residential school survivors and their families and communities access to the records gathered by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). The TRC documented the history and abusive nature of the Indian residential school system that operated in Canada for more than a hundred years.
In addition to the official opening, the April 9 ceremony will also include a statement of apology — on behalf of UBC — for its role in the system that supported the operation of the Indian residential schools.
Whatever your role, I hope you will take the time to witness this event – either in person or online. The event details are:
Date and time:
Monday April 9, 2018
1958 Main Mall
The opening ceremony will be outdoors, so please dress appropriately.
Faculty and staff on UBC’s Okanagan campus can watch the event live (online) at the University Centre Ballroom (UNC200). It will also be webcast for all UBC faculty and staff to view at https://ceremonies.ubc.ca/irshdc-opening/ (The webcast will remain online for those unable to take part on the day).
The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre aims to capture the long trajectory of Indigenous and Canadian relations, and ensure that the history of Canada’s Indian residential schools will never be forgotten. As members of the UBC community, I hope you will take the time to pause and reflect with us on April 9.
