We were recently reminded that all portable electronic devices, containing UBC information, must be encrypted. This policy applies, regardless of who owns the device. If it’s not encrypted, it should not contain UBC files. A two minute video explaining this can be found at https://youtu.be/Ergm4kwIghI
Portable electronic devices include laptops, tablets and smartphones. Some smartphones are encrypted by default, but laptops are not. Psychiatry IT has encrypted virtually all laptops that we directly support and most desktop computers prepared in the last two years.
We do not directly support many computers or any smartphones or tablets, that many of you are using for UBC business. UBC has provided some advice to assist you with encrypting computers at https://privacymatters.ubc.ca/encrypt-my-devices#self-encrypt and Lifewire has information for Android and Apple phones and tablets at https://www.lifewire.com/encrypt-the-data-on-your-android-phone-or-iphone-2377707
Please contact Psychiatry IT, if you have further questions.
