Best practice is to share files using a networked drive (e.g. P: drive), UBC Teamshare or UBC WorkSpace. When those options are not available you may choose to use a USB stick. UBC policy makes it mandatory to encrypt all mobile devices, including UBC files on USB sticks and removable drives.
Microsoft BitLocker is available on business versions of Windows, including;
- Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate
- Windows 8.1 Pro and Enterprise
- Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education
As long as the computer used to encrypt and the computer reading the encrypted file have any one of these Windows versions, it is very simple to do. A password will be required to read the files. You will then need to provide the password to the person reading the encrypted file by a different means that the drive is passed on. If the USB stick was sent by courier, then phone or e-mail the password.
Apple macOS (OS X) computers come with FileVault, which works in a very similar fashion.
