UBC Faculty of Medicine: Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize – NEW
The Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize, with a value of $50,000, is awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of brain disorders. Please note that based on the prize guidelines for the 2019 Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize, nominations must be for individuals external to the University of British Columbia. | Nomination Deadline: Feb 1

Trudeau Foundation: Fellowship
Each year, the Foundation selects up to five (5) Fellows who are top-level researchers and professors in the social sciences and humanities. Starting with this competition, academics wishing to be Fellows should from now on apply directly to the Foundation, rather than being nominated by the universities with which they are affiliated. Selected Fellows may receive up to $50,000 per year for 3 years, dependent on their services rendered. | Application Deadline: Feb 22

UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine: Switzer Prize – NEW
The Switzer Prize consists of a $25,000 honorarium and recognizes discoveries in basic research in the biological and biomedical sciences that have the potential to inspire transformative breakthroughs in medicine. It is awarded annually to an individual investigator whose recent work has revealed new paradigms, illuminated biological processes or pathways, or explained the origins of pathologies or diseases. | Nomination deadline: Feb 28

Event: UBC SPARC – Sex & Gender Considerations in Health Research Workshop – NEW
Description: CIHR applicants are encouraged to participate in a 1-hour workshop with Dr. Tamara Bodnar to review CIHR’s sex and gender directives and discuss their peer reviewer feedback or study design

Event: Alberta-British Columbia Islet Workshop
Description:The 8th annual Alberta-British Columbia Islet Workshop is being held February 13-15, 2019. The intended research community are faculty and trainees from across Western Canada engaged in islet research. Keynote speakers are Carmella Evans-Molina from Indiana University and Jonathan Schertzer from McMaster University.

Event: UBC Department of Dermatology – Annual UBC Skin Research Day
Description: Each year the UBC Department of Dermatology and Skin Science hosts the Skin Research Day during which original papers on a variety of topics including skin cancer, hair, immunology, photobiology, genomics, wound healing and educational research are presented. The integration of multiple health profession groups (medical, nursing) and trainees at different levels is a major strength of this event.

Faculty of Medicine Postdoctoral Enhanced Scholar Program

This new program is designed to encourage and facilitate Faculty of Medicine Postdoctoral Fellows in transitioning to professional positions in teaching, research, business, or clinical settings through self-directed formalized training and career development activities. Additionally, the program will provide semi-annual social networking events for Postdoctoral Fellows to meet with and get to know their colleagues working in other research sites throughout UBC.

BRC-Seq Discounted NGS Sequencing

The BRC-Sequencing Core is offering Faculty of Medicine members a 50% discount on pilot Single Cell 3’ RNA-Seq projects using the 10x Genomics Chromium Single Cell Controller and Illumina Sequencing.

This subsidy is provided by the FoM Strategic Investment Fund and is accessible only to FOM members. Supply of funding is limited. Subsidy will be distributed based on timing of contact, needs of pilot project, and demands of the community.

Total cost for Single Cell projects vary based on needs. For assistance designing and pricing of your scRNA-seq experiments, please contact us at BRCSeq@mail.ubc.ca
