Celebration of Life for Cindy Woo & the Establishment of the Cindy Woo Educational Fund for Research Technicians

Dear Department Members,

We are very sad to announce that Cindy Woo passed away on October 1, 2019, comfortably and with her son and family around her.

Cindy was the research coordinator and manager for the UBC Mood Disorders Program for over 10 years and was a consummate health research professional. She held deep knowledge about clinical research policies and was particularly helpful in developing standard operating procedures for research at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. Much of our success has been a direct result of her efforts. Cindy was also the glue that held our group together. Her friendly, calm nature and fun attitude made it easy for all staff and students to engage together and her efforts were instrumental for the high morale in our program. She received the UBC Department of Psychiatry Outstanding Staff Service Award in 2014 in recognition of her excellence.

Cindy was a beloved friend and colleague admired by everyone who worked with her. She was smart, incredibly capable, dedicated, calm in the face of stress, and unfailingly supportive. Cindy’s door was always open and no matter if you were a research coordinator, student, or psychiatrist, she would help with any questions or problems, big or small. Cindy was incredibly giving of herself; she would meet you with understanding, encouragement, guidance, and good sense. It’s no surprise that she contributed to the personal and professional growth of countless staff and students over the years, and was a role model to many.

Outside of work, Cindy organized and joined regular “extra-work” activities doing fun and silly things like tackling Escape Rooms, going for drinks, and celebrating with others their milestones and achievements. Cindy started the tradition of creating scripted videos for our Mood Disorders Holiday Party. Her video on Kleptostylomania remains a classic. She was tremendously devoted to her son, Brandon, who participated in several of the videos. She was also a sports fan, although her fandom of Calgary teams was a little questionable.

We will all dearly miss Cindy. Please join us for a Celebration of Life for her on Saturday, November 2, 2019, 1:00pm, at the Rudy North Lecture Theatre in the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at UBC (2215 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC).

In recognition of her contributions, her family and friends have established the Cindy Woo Educational Fund for Research Technicians. The fund will provide opportunities for professional development for the research assistants and technicians in the UBC Department of Psychiatry. Cindy would be very appreciative of your support for these educational activities for her research colleagues.  As well, please visit the UBC In Memoriam page for Cindy to add your stories and photos in honour of her memory.

Sincerely,

Raymond W. Lam and Vanessa C. Evans
