The Department congratulates Dr. Wei-Yi Song on his appointment as Department Head and Island Medical Director for Psychiatry and Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) within Island Health, effective January 1, 2020. In this role, Dr. Song will be responsible for ensuring high quality mental health and substance-related medical services across Island Health. His other responsibilities include overseeing the self-governance of psychiatrists and other members of medical staff working within mental health facilities on the Island, guiding the implementation of procedures to create and monitor medical practice standards, and supporting Island Health Psychiatry Department members who are engaged in research and medical education. He will also co-lead in supporting operation of MHSU activities and programs, and will work proactively with physicians, staff and patients in order to ensure continuous quality improvement of service delivery.
This new role is in addition to Dr. Song’s current leadership roles within UBC Psychiatry as the Associate Program Director for the Victoria-based Residency Program, and as UGE / PGE Discipline Specific Site Leader (DSSL) for Vancouver Island. A member of our clinical faculty since 2005, Dr. Song was most recently promoted in 2017 to the rank of Clinical Professor. Last fall, he completed his term as President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA), and continues to be active on various boards and committees, in CME engagements, and in teaching medical students and residents.
Please join us in sending our best wishes to Dr. Song in his new senior leadership role within Island Health!
