Re: Postgraduate Education Program Accreditation 2020 Results
Dear Colleagues and Residents,
The Accreditation review process for our Postgraduate Program has been completed, and we wish to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all of you for your contributions in supporting this process. We would especially like to thank the PGE administrative team, who went above and beyond to ensure this process ran as smoothly as possible.
While the result of the Accreditation will not be finalized until the Royal College Accreditation meeting in the fall of 2020, the preliminary result was that our program is fully accredited with an Action Plan Outcomes Report (APOR) required by the Royal College two years from now (this requirement may be revised at the fall meeting). To provide some context, the four possible levels of Accreditation are listed below:
1) Accreditation with review again in eight years
2) Accreditation with an APOR required in two years
3) Accreditation with an External Review by the College in two years
4) Accreditation with an Intent to withdraw the program in two years
The surveyors described how pleased they were with the many strengths of our program. These included responsive leadership, a stellar support staff, a great breadth of clinical experience, and a very engaged faculty, regarded by our trainees as excellent teachers. The surveyors were especially impressed by the fluidity with which the program runs, despite its complexity due to the varied sites and tracks.
The surveyors noted two key areas for follow-up: Firstly, the Royal College now requires that we make quality improvement initiatives mandatory for residents, and our program has access to many such opportunities. Secondly, the surveyors were aware of the significant work that has been done towards improving the learning environment in the Vancouver Island track, and would like ongoing work and monitoring of this going forward. In two year’s time (if the APOR designation is confirmed in the fall), we will prepare and submit a report to the Royal College outlining the changes implemented and the resultant improvements within these two key areas.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the Accreditation process or its preliminary results, please direct them to Dr. Irfan Khanbhai, Interim Postgraduate Program Director, firstname.lastname@example.org.
