COVID-19 Impact on UBC Faculty and Staff

Dear Colleagues,

A decision has been made that all public sector employees will continue to be paid for all of March and April.  That does not mean that layoffs are necessarily coming after that time, but rather that further assessments will be made during the coming weeks to determine what the situation will look like beyond the end of April.  Students, staff or faculty that had positions that were already scheduled to end in the coming weeks will continue to end as planned – there is no requirement to extend an individual whose position was already ending.  However, there have been a number of requests made to HR to discuss future layoffs, and if those are related to the current COVID-19 situation, they will not proceed at the current time.

There are still many unanswered questions, particularly related to research funded positions.  The University is working with governments, granting agencies and other universities to look at options, but no decisions have been made at this point.  We will continue to provide updates as soon as we have information.

I know this is a time of much anxiety, and the hope is that the news of continuity for the next few weeks is met positively. We are continuing to work on minimizing disruption for individuals and the organization as much as possible.
