Dear students, residents, staff and colleagues,
It is with mixed feelings that we announce the resignation of Dr. Ladan Sadrehashemi from her role as the Program Director of the Postgraduate Psychiatry Specialty Program in the UBC Department of Psychiatry, effective June 30, 2020. The Program and the Department will miss her outstanding leadership, but we respect her decision to focus her time on her young family while also pursuing other career aspirations.
Since starting in her role as the Program Director in 2013, Dr. Sadrehashemi has made a number of structural changes to the program, implementing processes to improve overall efficiency in order to ensure that the program has continued to meet and exceed its objectives per the accreditation standards of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) each year. She has provided authentic leadership to our PGE site leaders, preceptors, residents and staff across our training sites, fulfilling a number of vital functions including facilitating regular review and updating of the overall goals of training based on the CanMEDs competencies, overseeing the development and implementation of appropriate training sites throughout the province, advocating on behalf of the Department and UBC at local and national meetings, and maintaining the overall high quality of postgraduate psychiatry education within Vancouver as well as at all our distributed training sites. While the responsibilities of a postgraduate program director have become increasingly complex in recent years, particularly with the shift in accreditation standards as of July 1, 2019 and the introduction of Competency Based Medical Education (CBME), fortunately under Dr. Sadrehashemi’s competent direction and with the invaluable contribution of our Interim Postgraduate Program Director Dr. Irfan Khanbhai, Psychiatry PGME is very well prepared to make this transition.
Dr. Sadrehashemi has been an incredible leader in many other respects, not only in her ability to galvanize and maintain a strong sense of collegiality amongst our clinical teaching faculty, but also in the incredible rapport she has built with our residents. She has gone above and beyond to provide them with outstanding guidance and mentorship, ensuring they are well supported in their learning, in their career preparation, and importantly, in their personal wellbeing. We have seen a notable improvement in our pass rates, with 100% of our residents successfully completing their Royal College examinations in 2019, in large part due to Dr. Sadrehashemi’s commitment, dedication and hard work.
Hence, on behalf of the entire UBC Department of Psychiatry, we wish to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Sadrehashemi for her extraordinary contributions serving as the Postgraduate Program Director over these past seven years. We very much look forward to continuing to work with and support Dr. Sadrehashemi within her ongoing appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department.
As Dr. Sadrehashmi transitions out of this role, the Department will be initiating a formal search and selection process in the coming days to fill this vacancy.
Dr. Lakshmi N. Yatham, Professor and Head, UBC Department of Psychiatry
