FLEX Project Supervisor Opportunities

FLEX (Flexible and Enhanced Learning) is a series of courses occurring in Years 1, 2 and 4 of the UBC medical undergraduate program. FLEX offers undergraduate medical students exciting opportunities to pursue a variety of scholarly activities and projects.

Dear colleagues,

Given the current situation, all ongoing and planned FLEX projects involving direct patient contact and those that need to be done in clinical spaces or research labs have been cancelled. In addition, Year 4 FLEX projects have been brought forward to Year 3.

As such, there is a call for new opportunities that can be completed remotely.  We have received feedback that the pool of projects in Psychiatry is limited, and are looking for new FLEX supervisors to meet this need.

Examples of projects might include writing up a case study, production of teaching modules, or performing a literature review.

While no remuneration can be provided, past supervisors have appreciated the dedication and enthusiasm of FLEX students, who have made valuable contributions to a variety of clinical and basic research and teaching projects. Note that the hours spent supervising a student can be included by faculty in their Annual Activity Reports and Teaching Dossiers.

“Being a FLEX supervisor has been one of the teaching highlights of my past two years.  The three medical students I have supervised have been diligent, creative, responsive and enthusiastic.  They have had the time and flexibility to participate substantially in research and resource development projects; interviewing youth and parents, creating on-line resources for families, and developing a national teaching podcast for medical students.  These medical students were interested in pursuing family medicine, psychiatry and pediatrics; thus working on child psychiatry projects gave them first-hand experience in an area of medicine that will be useful in their careers.  If you have an interesting project, I strongly recommend becoming a FLEX supervisor”.  — A recent FLEX supervisor.

FLEX dates for 2020:

Year 1: April 27 – June 5
Year 2: April 20 – May 18
Year 3: April 8 – June 26
