Dear students, residents, staff and colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anthony Bailey to the new role of Director of Continuing Professional Development in the UBC Department of Psychiatry. This appointment is effective June 1, 2020 and will be for a term of three years and seven months.
As the Director of Continuing Professional Development, Dr. Bailey will provide leadership in developing and promoting competency based continuing professional development (CPD) within the Department. He will be responsible for developing the strategic direction for the Department CPD, ensuring it is relevant to enhancing competency in mental health care for physicians in BC, and also responsive to the needs and strengths of our department members. As well, Dr. Bailey will oversee faculty mentorship and the development of future leaders in CPD within the Department, and will promote an environment that integrates research with CPD within and across disciplines, in alignment with the Department strategic plan. He will play a key role in building and facilitating strategic operational partnerships between the Department and various academic centers, institutes, and government agencies to advance the national and global profile of the UBC Psychiatry leadership in CPD, and will contribute actively to the implementation of the Departmental strategic plan in this regard.
A psychiatrist and a world renowned expert in autism spectrum disorders, Dr. Bailey has been a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and has held the IMH Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry since 2010. Prior to joining our faculty, Dr. Bailey was the Cheryl and Reece Scott Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford, where he also served as the Academic Coordinator of Specialist Registrar Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Previously, he served as the Director of Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Senior and Specialist Registrars at The Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals in the UK.
Since joining UBC, Dr. Bailey has been very active in promoting continuing professional education. In recent years, he has delivered workshops and lectures at a number of CME and CPD events, including Autism Community Training’s (ACT) 13th Annual Focus on Research Conference, an Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) Training Workshop at CAMH at the University of Toronto, and an Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI) Training Workshop at UBC. He has also served as a Session Chair for the 22nd International Association for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions World Congress, and in 2019, he was the Conference Organizer and Faculty Presenter at an intensive 2-day CPD seminar titled “Diagnosing and Managing ASD in Adults.” Since 2011, Dr Bailey has been a member of the CACAP Research and Scientific Committee, which is responsible for the scientific program of the association’s annual conference. He is currently working with UBC CPD and CIRCA to develop educational materials on ASD for physicians. As Associate Director of Education for the Residency Research Track (RT) he has introduced a mentoring scheme for RT Residents. Annually, Dr. Bailey delivers lectures on ASD-related topics to colleagues at academic institutions and research centres worldwide.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Bailey to this significant new leadership role!
