2021 COUPE Early Undergraduate Educator Award

PURPOSE:

The Canadian Organization of Undergraduate Psychiatric Educators (COUPE) is proud to award, on an annual basis, the COUPE Early Undergraduate Educator Award. First established in 2019, this Award is designed to recognize a teacher or educator who is actively involved in Undergraduate Medical Education, and demonstrates enthusiasm, creativity and innovation to inspire learners in Psychiatry.

ELIGIBILITY:

The candidate must be within their first 10 years of practice and have a Faculty Appointment at one of the 17 Canadian medical schools, at the level of Assistant Professor/Clinical Assistant Professor, or lower.

The candidate should demonstrate innovation in and/or dedication to Undergraduate Medical Education in Psychiatry in one or more of the following areas:

  • Curriculum development
  • Teaching effectiveness
  • Mentorship
  • Promotion of psychiatry
  • Leadership,
  • Educational scholarship
  • Dedication to undergraduate teaching
  • Commitment to educational excellence/professional development

Favorable consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate innovation and excellence in Undergraduate Medical Education in Psychiatry particularly at provincial and national levels. Receipt of local and/or departmental award(s) will also be viewed favorably.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Application packages are welcome to be submitted in either English or in French
  • The Application package cannot be more than ten (10) pages, excluding the applicant’s Curriculum Vitae
  • There is a maximum of one applicant per Canadian medical school. Prior unsuccessful nominees are welcome to re-apply.

SUBMISSION PACKAGES MUST INCLUDE:

  1. A personal statement from the candidate (not more than 2 pages; 12 point font) outlining the relevant highlights of their academic activities and involvement in education that is the focus of the award topic.
  2. Nomination letter from a Faculty member in a leadership position (Departmental Chair or designate, or Faculty member in an undergraduate leadership position).
  3. Two (2) letters of reference [one (1) may be from a medical student, if appropriate].
  4. An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.

DEADLINE:

Nomination packages must be submitted to Dr. Kathryn Fung, (kathryn.fung@vch.ca) by email, no later than Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at 5:00 PM (Local Time). Paper submissions will not be accepted. Late submissions will not be considered.

PRIZE:

The Award recipient will be notified by e-mail and will receive a Certificate of Recognition from COUPE and the letter will be copied to the Chair of the Department and to the Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education of the recipient’s Department/University.

The Award recipient will be invited to attend the COUPE Fall Meeting (usually held in conjunction with the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) Annual Meeting (typically held in September/October each year), to receive from the Committee formal acknowledgement of their Award. As well, an announcement will be made at the CPA Annual Meeting.
