Announcement of New Clinical Faculty Affairs Representative for Psychiatry, Dr. Joseph Tham

Dear colleagues,

Following the recent call for expressions of interest in the role of Clinical Faculty Affairs Representative for the Department of Psychiatry, we are delighted to announce that the sole nominee, Dr. Joseph Tham, has been elected by acclamation to this role and will serve for a three-year term from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024.

As the new Clinical Faculty Affairs Representative for Psychiatry, Dr. Tham will fulfill an essential function as the key liaison between the Department and UBC FoM Clinical Faculty Affairs. He will be responsible for advocating for the broad interests of our clinical faculty across the province, identifying and bringing forward key issues at bimonthly Clinical Faculty Advisory Council meetings, as well as developing and recommending actions to address these issues. He will also play an instrumental role in promoting and facilitating career development initiatives and opportunities for clinical faculty. In this new capacity, Dr. Tham will join various departmental committees, including our Executive, Advisory, and Clinical Faculty Appointment and Promotion Committees.

As a Clinical Associate Professor who has been a member of the Department since 2003, Dr. Tham has been actively teaching medical students and residents in psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation medicine, as well as clinical fellows over the years. He is also engaged in various research programs, and presents regularly at grand rounds and national conferences on an annual basis. Dr. Tham is a specialist in neuropsychiatry, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and neurostimulation, and is currently the ECT Coordinator at UBC Hospital, the Physician Lead in the Alder Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and is also the Associate Medical Manager for the BC Neuropsychiatry Program.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. Tham to this important new role in the Department, and in once again thanking the outgoing Clinical Faculty Affairs Representative Dr. Marilyn Champagne for her dedication and many valuable contributions over the last three years.
