Dear Department members,
It is with mixed feelings that we announce that Ms. Julia Lew, Educational Technologist in the Department of Psychiatry, will be retiring from UBC as of July 31, 2021. While we could not be happier for Julia and send her our hearty congratulations as she begins this new chapter in her life, we will deeply miss her caring, kind, and wonderfully positive presence, the calm and peaceful energy she brought to every situation and interaction, and the amazing support she provided to her colleagues and all faculty, staff, and learners across the Department.
Julia joined the Department in March 2015, and as the Educational Technologist, she has been responsible for coordinating and overseeing the delivery of the Vancouver Summer Program (VSP) introduced in the summer of 2015, as well as the Psychiatry Summer Immersion Program (PSIP) launched in 2018. Her key responsibilities included developing a variety of teaching and presentation materials for course instructors, preparing program assessment and educational analytic evaluation tools, and ensuring smooth delivery of the curricula as well as an engaging and enriching classroom experience for all students enrolled in these programs. As both the VSP and PSIP were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, Julia redirected her focus to provide essential support to the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Psychiatry Education Programs, which was very much appreciated especially during critical transition periods within our Education staff. In her role, and particularly during the challenges of the pandemic, Julia has shown exceptional adaptability and resourcefulness, complementing the consistently outstanding level of dedication, initiative and service she has demonstrated over these last six years.
Pending Julia’s retirement, we anticipate further developments and announcements coming in the near future with regard to the vacancy. On behalf of the entire Department, I wish to thank Julia for the many significant and valuable contributions she has made to the Psychiatry Administration team and to the rest of our staff, faculty and learners. Please join me in congratulating Julia and wishing her much enjoyment, health and relaxation as she settles into her much deserved retirement!
