We are deeply saddened to share the news that Dr. Kiri Simms passed away on August 3, 2022. Dr. Simms had been a Victoria-based emergency psychiatrist since 2006, joining the UBC Department of Psychiatry as a Clinical Instructor in 2013. In addition to her various clinical roles with Island Health, she was appointed as Lead Psychiatrist at Homewood Ravensview in 2019. Prior to joining the Vancouver Island medical community, she practiced at the Centre Hospitalier Fleury and the Douglas Mental Health University institute in Montreal.
As a valued UBC Psychiatry member, Dr. Simms made important contributions to our psychiatry medical education program on the Island, particularly through her supervision of countless medical students and residents on the Emergency Psychiatry rotation. Their experiences with Dr. Simms have always been exceedingly positive, and she was consistently praised for her enthusiasm and engaging teaching style, her brilliant knowledge and insight, and her ability to create a safe and supportive environment for learners. Her expertise spanned a wide range of areas, including crisis intervention, PTSD, addictions, neuropsychiatry, and the study of the classification of mental disorders, which was widely recognized and highly regarded by her peers.
The passing of Dr. Simms is a significant loss to the Department, and to the mental health care community in Victoria and beyond. She was an outstanding clinician who will be remembered for her tireless dedication to her profession, and for her genuine care, warmth and generosity toward her many colleagues, patients, mentees and students. Our sincerest condolences go to the family and loved ones of Dr. Simms during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Sunday September 25, 2022, at 2:00pm.
