20110909 Two new Academic Appointments in FoM

Sent on behalf of Dean Gavin Stuart

To members of the UBC Faculty of Medicine:

I am pleased to announce the following two new Academic Appointments in the UBC Faculty of Medicine:

Dr. Howard Feldman has been appointed Executive Associate Dean, Research, effective January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2016. Dr. Feldman is also a Professor of Neurology in the Department of Medicine. In January 2009, he took a leave from his academic appointments to take on the role of Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head in Neuroscience, Global Clinical Research and Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb. In this role, he led research and development of novel pharmaceutical therapies for neurological and psychiatric conditions at the company’s laboratories in Connecticut.
In his new role as Executive Associate Dean, Research, Dr. Feldman will provide strategic leadership for research programs within the Faculty of Medicine and will work with our Research Centres, Institutes and Health Authority Partners to enhance health research in the Faculty and to contribute to our international reputation for excellence in health sciences research. He will be a key member of the Faculty’s executive management team.

Dr. George Mackie will continue as the interim Executive Associate Dean, Research until Dr. Feldman joins us in the New Year, and I wish to thank him once again for his direction, leadership and support during the recruitment process.

Dr. Dawn DeWitt has been appointed Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Fraser, effective January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2016. Most recently, Dr. DeWitt served as Foundation Chair of the Rural Health Academic Centre, Melbourne Medical School and Clinical Dean, Rural Clinical School at the University of Melbourne. In this role, she led the development of Australia’s first purpose-built interprofessional learner-centred teaching clinic.

In the new role of Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Fraser, Dr. DeWitt will provide strategic leadership for the MD undergraduate program and the post-graduate training and education programs in Vancouver Fraser. Dr. DeWitt will complement the strong leadership of the existing three Regional Associate Deans in the Northern, Island and Southern Medical Programs. Given the recent growth of the Vancouver-Fraser Medical Program, the distribution and expansion of postgraduate training positions and the evolving relationships with Simon Fraser University and Fraser Health, Dr. DeWitt will bring key leadership to this complex and dynamic region.

The role of interim Associate Dean, MD Undergraduate Education, Curriculum and Vancouver Fraser Medical Program has been very effectively held by Dr. Karen Joughin and we look forward to her continued contributions to the Faculty of Medicine in a leadership capacity.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Howard Feldman and Dr. Dawn DeWitt to their new leadership positions.
