Short Biography

Dr. Jennifer Russel is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UBC Department of Psychiatry, and was appointed as the Program Director for Postgraduate Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Subspecialty in 2021. In this role, she has been responsible for the overall delivery of the program, ensuring that it continues to fully meet the RCPSC standards of accreditation. Her duties have also included overseeing the successful implementation of the Competence By Design (CBD) curriculum in the CAP Subspecialty Program as of July 1, 2021.

A Department member since 2011, Dr. Russel is also the Associate Head of Psychiatry at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) for Child, Youth and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Russel previously served as Interim Psychiatrist in Chief for BCCH and Women’s Hospital, as the Medical Director for the BCCH Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, and as the Clinical Director for the Compass Program. In 2020, Dr. Russel was named a Physician Changemaker by the Canadian Medical Association.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Russel’s clinical focus is leveraging technology and clinical innovation to build capacity and improve care and improve equity for children and youth living with complex mental health presentations living in rural and remote areas. She was a cofounder of the Psychological PPE program, with expertise in Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Vicarious Trauma. She is also a certified organizational coach.
