20120203 Faculty volunteers needed for Responsible Conduct of Research course

The following letter is being sent on behalf of Susan Porter, Dean pro tem of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; please distribute to faculty members in your units.

Dear colleagues,

I’m writing for your help in serving as a facilitator in our Responsible Conduct of Research course, which is mandatory for all life/medical science research graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine. As per the attached synopsis and course schedule, the course covers a wide range of topics, including responsible data presentation, data management, authorship, conflicts of interest, human subject research, mentoring, etc. A critical component of the course and the most popular and effective according to past evaluations are the case discussions. Faculty involvement in these discussions is crucial for the success of the course; the personal experiences and stories of faculty make the situations raised in the course real and relevant for the students and it demonstrates the importance with which these matters are viewed at all levels of academia. Students have stated many times that faculty involvement is necessary and appreciated, and the opinion is frequently raised (by both students and faculty!) that it should be mandatory for faculty as well as students. Postdoctoral fellows also attend to help faculty, and benefit from the discussions.

The expectations for faculty attending are that they provide comments as relevant during the lectures and facilitate the small groups in case discussions. Facilitator notes are provided beforehand, so there is very little preparation required. We would ideally include 3-5 faculty members for each offering.

We would be very grateful for faculty volunteers for the following offerings:

Feb. 14 & 15 at VGH in the Diamond Health Care Centre (mornings only)

June 5 & 6 at UBC Life Sciences Centre (mornings only).

If you are available, please contact Jacqui Brinkman (jacqui.brinkman@ubc.ca) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

We are extremely appreciative of the faculty who have volunteered in past offerings. Thank you very much to Eric Accili, Pascal Bernatchez, Carolyn Brown, Hélène Côté, M.B. Coulter-Mackie, Denise Daley, Angela Devlin, Caigan Du, Vince Duronio, Maria I.C. Gyongyossy-Issa, John S. Hill, Lorienne M Jenstad, Robert Kay, Peter Leung, Adrian Levy, Honglin Luo, Erin Michalak, Alice Mui, Joel Oger, Peter Paré, Haydn Pritchard, Jacqueline Quandt, Lynn Raymond, Clive R Roberts, Christopher Shaw, James R. Thompson, and David Walker.

Please let Jacqui or me know if you have questions about participating.
