Research and Interests

Dr. Schwieghofer’s research interests are focused on forensic psychiatry, mental health and substance abuse, sex offender management in correctional systems, and sexual addiction.

Dr. Schewighofer first gained knowledge of addictions related issues and drug policy while studying as an undergraduate under Dr. Bruce Alexander at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

His doctoral training in clinical psychology included a full year rotation at the Addictions Centre at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta as well as the completion of a doctoral dissertation examining the attitudes and clinical opinions of substance abuse treatment providers.  More recently, he worked for almost ten years at the Drug Treatment Court of Vancouver and three years at the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addictions.

Dr. Schweighofer also sees clients with addictions related concerns in his private practice.  In addition to substance-related addictions, he also sees clients who suffer from sexually compulsive behaviour.
