The geriatric psychiatry services at Providence Health Care have inpatient and outpatient components across two hospital sites (Mount Saint Joseph Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital) as well as support for five Residential Care facilities. One South is an inpatient unit located at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital and provides interdisciplinary acute secondary level assessment, treatment and a secondary level stabilization of older psychiatric patients. One South has 16 beds and the average length of stay is 2 to 8 weeks. The most common diagnoses on One South include dementia with behavioural disturbances, depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. The Geriatric Electroconvulsive Therapy Service is a community resource and provides care to inpatients and outpatients. A consultation-liaison service is available to the medical and surgical units, as well as the Emergency Department across the PHC hospital sites. This service often assists with management of delirium, and challenges with capability issues. Geriatric psychiatry outpatient clinics are available at both hospital sites for assessment and follow-up care.
Patients are referred through the Central Intake Service for the Elder Care Program from the community and other hospitals. The attending physicians are psychiatrists who work with clinical associates (family physicians), geriatricians, rehabilitation therapists, neuropsychologists and social workers to coordinate care. Outpatient ECT referrals for both acute and maintenance courses are also made through Central Intake and come from community physicians, mental health teams, and other hospital sites. Central Intake also manages referrals to the outpatient clinics.
