Sinan Gülöksüz

Short Biography

Dr. Sinan Gülöksüz joined the Department of Psychiatry in 2026 as an Associate Professor (tenure), based at the Northern Medical Program in Prince George. He received his medical degree from Gazi University School of Medicine (Türkiye), followed by an MSc in Affective Neuroscience and a PhD in Mental Health and Neuroscience from Maastricht University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education with Distinction from Cardiff University. Prior to joining UBC, Dr. Gülöksüz held a tenured Associate Professor position at Maastricht University’s School of Mental Health and Neuroscience and an Associate Professor Adjunct position in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Gülöksüz has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles and six book chapters in high-impact journals including JAMA Psychiatry, World Psychiatry, The Lancet Psychiatry, and Nature. In 2024, he received the Research Excellence Award from the Schizophrenia International Research Society. He serves as Associate Editor for NPJ Mental Health Research, Journal of Dual Diagnosis, and PLOS One, and is a member of the editorial board for The British Journal of Psychiatry.

Research Focus

Dr. Gülöksüz is a leading expert in psychiatric epidemiology, with a focus on understanding the exposome—the totality of environmental exposures over a lifetime—and how it contributes to the development of psychiatric disorders, disorder trajectories, and resilience. He was the first investigator to propose the exposome paradigm for psychiatry and has successfully applied the exposome score to understand the genetic and environmental etiology of schizophrenia and improve risk prediction. His innovative work on gene-environment interactions in psychosis spectrum disorders has been supported by major international funding bodies, including the European Commission, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.
