Short Biography

Dr. John-Jose Nunez is a psychiatrist and researcher whose work combines psychiatry and computer science. He holds an MD and MSc in Computer Science from UBC and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (Psychiatry). A graduate of the Department’s Residency Program Research Track, he was a two-time IMH Marshall Fellow  (2022/23 and 2023/24), supported by the UBC Institute of Mental Health and the BC Cancer Foundation. Following his fellowship, he was appointed as a Clinical Instructor in the Department in 2024, contributing to both research and teaching.

Dr. Nunez has held fellowships at the UBC Mood Disorders Centre and BC Cancer, where his research has focused on challenges at the intersection of mental health and cancer care. He is an active member of national and international research networks, including CREST.BD, the International Society for Bipolar Disorder, the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression and the Multinational Association for Supportive Cancer Care.

Research Focus

Dr. Nunez’s research explores the use of computational methods—including artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing—to improve outcomes for people living with mood disorders and for patients managing both cancer and mental illness. His program aims to harness digital tools and clinical data to enhance diagnosis, prediction and treatment, positioning UBC Psychiatry as a leader in computational psychiatry and digital mental health innovation.
