Short Biography

Dr. Heng has been with the Department since completing his postgraduate education in psychiatry at UBC in 2014. He is currently an outpatient psychiatrist at Richmond General Hospital and holds an appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department. Since 2021, Dr. Heng has served as Associate Program Director for the Vancouver Track, where he has worked with Site Director and Associate Program Director colleagues to maintain a consistent training experience for the Vancouver, IMG, and Research Track residents. He has nurtured a safe learning environment by working closely with the faculty and the resident body while navigating the delicate conversations needed for learners in difficulty. He has also chaired the Resident Wellness Committee and has instituted new initiatives program-wide, including three iterations of Resident Wellness surveys, a consultation group for residents, and reworked and simplified the resident leave policies to make it more accessible for residents. Prior to this role, he served as Site Director at Richmond General Hospital from 2016 to 2021, where he coordinated resident education, reviewed academic policies for the UBC postgraduate education program, and ensured teaching and learning standards were maintained.

Dr. Heng’s commitment to education has been recognized through the UBC Psychiatry Residents Association Annual Award for Teaching Excellence, which he received in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2021.
