The UBC Department of Psychiatry offers opportunities for medical doctors from Canada and abroad who wish to pursue additional training as Postgraduate Clinical Fellows or Postgraduate Trainees.
A Postgraduate Clinical Fellow is a post-MD trainee who is pursuing further clinical or research training in their own specialty which will not be evaluated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
A Postgraduate Trainee is a post-MD trainees who are pursuing further clinical or research training in their own specialty, but who have not yet completed sufficient training that would allow them to be registered as a specialist in their home country.
OVERVIEW
- It is the responsibility of applicants to identify faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry willing to act as supervisors to the Clinical Fellows or Trainees during their time at UBC.
- The supervisors and the applicant will coordinate with the administrative office of the UBC Department of Psychiatry to generate an offer letter.
- Following their offer letter, Non-Canadians applying from abroad will need to complete the Immigration Process.
- All applicants need to obtain a license to practice through the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia. These processes may take up to 6 months to complete.
- Upon arrival at UBC, Non-Canadian applicants need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
POSTGRADUATE CLINICAL FELLOWS
- These opportunities are available for medical doctors who are registered as specialists in Psychiatry or related medical disciplines in their home countries.
- Details about eligibility and the application process are provided by the FoM Postgraduate Medical Education office, including information about Immigration and Work Permit requirements. There are separate processes for Canadian applicants and non-Canadian international applicants.
POSTGRADUATE TRAINEES
- These opportunities are available to medical doctors who have not completed their specialist training in their home country.
- Details about eligibility and the application process are provided by the FoM Postgraduate Medical Education office, including details about Immigration and Work Permits for Non-Canadian international applicants.
INTERNATIONALLY SPONSORED (VISA) TRAINEES
- This program is open to Non-Canadian international medical doctors whose fees and salary while at UBC are sponsored by an organization in their home country.
- An agreement between the applicant’s institution and UBC must be in place prior to initiating the application. Details about eligibility and the application process are provided by the FoM Postgraduate Medical Education office.
